Internet Broadband in Loughton

Milton Keynes Broadband Action Group was originally formed to pressure BT into providing Broadband in the Monkston areas of Milton Keynes where Broadband could not be provided due to the use of fibre (TPON) which does not support ADSL.

It was soon realised that many other parts of Milton Keynes were also unable to access broadband services and initial discussions with MK Council suggested that a wireless network would be able to cover the areas outside BTs then ADSL coverage. Whilst the wireless trial from the mast at Linford Wood was very successful, there were still many parts of Milton Keynes that were screened from the transmitter and the service was therefore discontinued in September 2004.

Further pressure from Milton Keynes Broadband Action Group helped persuade BT to run trials of Long Reach ADSL which extended Broadband beyond the then limit of about 6 km. Whilst this brought many parts of Milton Keynes within the range of Broadband, there were still some areas that were still too far, and Milton Keynes Broadband Action Group has turned its attention to solving the remaining problem areas.

There are many areas of Loughton that still cannot receive broadband, due to the long line lengths from the Bradwell Abbey exchange (actually in Fishermead), even though most of the rest of the UK is steaming ahead with broadband services!

BT have said that they're investigating the business case for resolving Loughton's broadband 'not spots'. They may choose to lay new cables.

Another potential solution may be wireless, provided by an independent company.

Joining our group (currently about 120 are from Loughton) will give a ready indication of the demand, and may even become a 'self-fulfilling prophecy': if there is enough interest then BT can justify the investment to solve the problem.
